Spring 2019 Class Descriptions
HOUR 1
I AM Musical Too!
(Pre-K-12th)
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Fee: $57
Instructor: Dr. Eric Rasmussen
(You are able to join this class, even if you did not attend the prior class.)
Children best learn music from experiencing and understanding differences among a variety of cultures, styles, and contexts. The purpose of this class is to expand or solidify your child's natural ability to “be” musical. Experience is best gained by doing, failing, trying, and doing. Therefore, singing, chanting (rapping), moving, dancing, performing, and playing will be emphasized. Also, because tonal, rhythm and harmonic music vocabularies are fundamental building blocks from which students gain an understanding of music, expect some short (3-5+ minutes) daily homework (sound files of patterns to imitate). The students will possibly be involved in a large collaborative creative project to which the whole class will contribute. Join Dr. Eric Rasmussen, PhD Chair, Early Childhood Music, Peabody Prep of Johns Hopkins Univ. for an exploratory course involving vocalizations, instruments, and music appreciation.
*New for this class: Harmonic understanding will be added to their class experiences and homework. What chords go to what melodies and when do they change? Children as young as 5 years old are often successful learning the basics, sometimes in short order. Adults, though, can have a difficult time if they're not prepared early in life. Start them off well. It's never too late.
Each family will need to purchase directly from Dr. Eric musical files for practice amounting to $28/family.
**If you are new to this class, you will need to purchase the previous CD as well.

Roots and Shoots Service Learning Project: Helping Homeless Animals
(4th-12th)
12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Fee: $35
Instructor: Dr. Angela Jancius
Mahatma Gandhi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” The Roots & Shoots curriculum was designed by Dr. Jane Goodall, who has fought to preserve the living habitats of chimpanzees. It’s a service learning program that aims to teach leadership skills and show young people that they can be powerful agents of change at the local level, in their communities. This Roots & Shoots unit focuses on assisting animals in need. The class will partner with a local animal shelter. As a group, we will think about what an animal shelter is, whom it serves, and why animal shelters exist in a community. Students are encouraged to discuss their relationships with animals, as well as share photos of their pets. To complete the service learning component, they will create items such as beds and toys for homeless animals awaiting adoption. If there is interest, the class will organize a small fundraiser for our partnering animal shelter (such as a bake sale, a sale of animal artwork, etc.). Throughout the course, students can utilize the resources of the Roots & Shoots website (www.rootsandshoots.org) and share their service project with a worldwide community of young people who are making a difference.
**Students must have strong reading and basic composition skills for this course.
***Homework for this class might include finishing work started in class as well as research at home. Dr. Angela will not always be assigning homework, but please be prepared for a potential of 1-2 hours of work at home.
Design Squad Global Inventing Green Club
(4th-9th)
12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Fee: $20
Instructor: Joanne Durrett
(CLASS FULL- WAIT LIST AVAILABLE)
Based on the Emmy-Award winning PBS KIDS program, Design Squad Global Club is an enrichment experience that introduces children to engineering and invention through fun, hands-on activities. At each session, club members design, invent, and build projects that help solve environmental problems. Your child will have fun while strengthening his/her problem solving skills, creativity, confidence, and ability to work well with other children. Your child will also have the opportunity to communicate and collaborate with children from a different country! Each club is paired with a club from another part of the world. Partner clubs share their experiences by exchanging design ideas, photos, and videos. Along the way, they will learn about each other’s cultures, communities, and lives.
Highlights of the DSG Club experience -
• Creative Problem Solving. Kids are called upon to use their imaginations and analytical skills through open-ended, hands-on engineering challenges.
• The Design Process. They learn to use a series of tried-and-true steps to think through and work out a problem.
• Science and Engineering Concepts in Context. Your child will discover science and engineering concepts firsthand, through their own iterative design process.
• Global Competency. We will explore our interconnected world and learn how to communicate and collaborate with people who have different perspectives, cultures, and backgrounds.
• Environmental Sustainability. The kids will discuss environmental issues that affect their communities and the world, brainstorm solutions, and learn to design sustainable inventions—things made today that will not hurt the environment tomorrow.
