Spring 2018 Class Descriptions

HOUR 1


Geography
(Pre-K-8th)
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.           Fee: $20
Instructor: Mandy Wingate

Make a map, locate a lake, and mold a mountain! In this class, we will explore the globe and learn about land and water forms as a hands-on experience.



Sewing 2 
(3rd-8th)
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.           Fee: $45
Instructor: Donna Marshall
Prerequisite: Beginner’s Sewing

We will begin with a welcome back refresher and then move on to create a tissue pouch.  For the next two weeks, we will work on advancing our skills while making a "Shark attack" zippered pencil case!  Finally, for the remaining classes, we will make a "Rail fence" 36 x 45" lap quilt (this can be made to match their pillow or pillow case from Sewing 1)!  The basic supplies will be provided, and the students will get to choose their own fabrics again for their designs!


Software Engineering Is As Easy As Pi, 2
(6th-8th)
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.       Fee: $30
Instructor: Chris Langmead

Prerequisite: Software Engineering Is As Easy As Pi 1.

This course will build upon the engineering and programming principles learned in the first class.  We will create programs from scratch to access an array of sensors to create systems.  We will explore advanced programming topics including functions and procedures, reading and writing files, and parallel programming. 

There will be occasional homework required.
 


HOUR 2

Comparative Fairy Tales

(Pre-K- 4th)

11:05 a.m. - 12:05 p.m.   Fee: $30

Instructor: Miriam Snare


Each class session will focus on a different fairy tale.  We will read 2-3 versions of the tale (from different cultures, perspectives, etc.). Students will participate in activities related to the story (craft, acting out elements, etc.).
 


Altered Book Class (CLASS FULL- WAIT LIST AVAILABLE)
(4th-8th)
11:05 a.m. – 12:05 p.m.      Fee: $30
Instructor: Shelley Langmead

We will take one of our favorite hardcover books and 'alter' the pages using different types of media to create our own unique piece of art!

**An altered book is a form of mixed media artwork that permanently changes a book from its original form into a different form, altering its appearance.  An altered book artist takes a book (old, new or recycled) and cuts, tears, glues, folds, paints, adds to, collages, creates pop-ups, and/or rubber-stamps it. The artist may add pockets and niches to hold tags, rocks, or other three-dimensional objects. 


Students will need to provide one hardcover book for this class (new or used).


Sewing 3 (CLASS FULL- WAIT LIST AVAILABLE)
(3rd-8th)
11:05 a.m. – 12:05 p.m.     Fee: $45
Instructor: Donna Marshall
Prerequisite: Beginner’s Sewing and Sewing 2

We will build on the skills we have learned in Sewing 1 and 2.  We will begin with a Valentine mug rug.  A mug rug is bigger than a coaster and smaller than a placemat, perfect for a cup of cocoa and a cookie! Then we will create pajama pants!!  We will learn to read a pattern, cut out the pieces and sew and fit the pattern.  Plus, we will learn how to add elastic to the waistband. Finally, we will will make a quilted runner using a triangle pattern and then quilt it with our sewing machine.  It can be used as a table runner or an end-of-bed runner.


HOUR 3


Crazy Concoctions
(Pre-K -5th)
12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.         Fee: $30
Instructor: Kristen Mumaw


 Who says learning is boring?? Art meets science in this fun, hands-on class! Students will have the chance to concoct new and unique art supplies using different methods and through a variety of experiments. Once the supplies are made, students will use them for various projects.  



If You Were Me and Lived In…
(3rd-8th)
12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.       Fee: $30
Instructor: Jennifer Davis

Have you ever wondered what it is like growing up in another country? Join us as we learn about life around the world, from a child's point of view. We will learn about different cultures, sample their food, do crafts, discuss their celebrations and day to day life using the book series “If You Were Me and Lived…” by Carole P. Roman.  (This class will focus on 6 new countries, not previously discussed.) 

Must have good spelling & writing skills!


Sampling of Biology

(6th-8th)
12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.       Fee: $40
Instructor: Laurie Host


Students will participate in hands-on experiments and activities from different areas of biology,  Topics include DNA extraction, blood typing, bacterial growth, sheep brain dissection, planaria behavior, and more.  


Classroom Rules:

1. Students will be required to work in groups.

2. Students are expected to participate in their group/class.

3.Students must be on their best behavior!  We will be working with chemicals and other potentially dangerous equipment (scalpels, knives). Repeated disruptions will not be allowed.

4. If students do not abide by the rules, they will be dismissed from class until the behavior is resolved.


Parents and students will need to sign a safety sheet stating they understand the rules.  


Beginner Sewing 
(ADULTS)
12:30 p.m. -1:30 p.m.       Fee: $50
Instructor: Donna Marshall

Now is our chance to learn how to sew, just like our kids! After a brief history of sewing & learning the parts of a machine we will begin making some fun projects!

Using some basic math skills, we will cut & sew a  pillowcase.   After mastering this, we will move on to making a decorator monogram pillow using fusible web transfers, zigzag applique stitches and pillow construction.  Then as we continue to build our skills, we will make a stylish tote bag.

Adults will provide their own fabric which is minimal for each project (savvy people can use coupons!).   This gives you a chance to pick out a favorite color, theme, or character print.  Sewing machines, thread and any sewing tools needed for construction will be provided.
