SPRING 2020 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Mission Solar System
(Ages 9+)
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.       Fee: $25
Instructor: Joanne Durrett


NASA and Design Squad Nation have teamed up to inspire a new generation of engineers! This class launches into space exploration with space-based, hands-on engineering challenges. The activities are designed to give kids fun, relevant ways to apply STEM concepts and skills. We will work our way through six challenges created by the PBS Kids in collaboration with NASA K-12 Education Program. Kids will build a "robo arm," change the direction of a speeding object using invisible forces, design and build an airbag system, detect magnetic fields, and much more. They will learn to think like NASA engineers and apply creative problem-solving skills on fun missions! 


Stretching Our Limits

(Ages 5-12)

10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.          Fee: $20.00

Instructor: Tina Cassell


Through games, poses, and mindful breathing we will develop skills to help us find some internal quiet in the noise of everyday life. 


*Please bring a yoga mat to class with you. 


All Star Music Squad
(Ages 8+)
10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.           Fee: $60.00
Instructor: Chris Montcalmo


Join us for the All-Star Music Squad where we will learn to sing and appreciate the joy of music.

Kids will sing a variety of songs while learning about basic time signatures, major/minor tonality, and the fundamentals of reading music.

Chris Montcalmo has been playing music in & around the Maryland area for more than three decades. Now a full-time musician, Chris has a minor in music from the University of Delaware, he has sung with the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, he is the former lead singer for the rock band Union Jack, he is the current director of contemporary music at St. Isaac Jogues, and he currently plays solo acoustic and piano shows all around the state.


Electronics Lab
(Ages 12+)
10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.           Fee: $40.00
Instructor: Chris Langmead


In this class, we will have a review of fundamental electronics, perform circuit analysis, and develop a semester wide project. There may be some homework. 


***Chris is also going to have an electrical engineer from Lockheed Martin come in and talk to the kids for a class period.



HOUR 2



Illustration
​(Ages 11+)
11:05 a.m. – 12:05 p.m.       Fee: $30
Instructor: Dawn York


The students will work together on creating either children's book or comic book. We will focus on composing a story and illustrating it. We will have a complete book by the end of the session!  We will utilize watercolor and marker on paper. 



Microsoft Office Skills
(Ages 11+)
11:05 a.m. - 12:05 p.m.   Fee: $20
Instructor: Miriam Snare

This course introduces students to the basics of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Each program will be covered over two class meetings. Skills will include page layout, inserting tables and editing capabilities. 


Students are required to bring a computer with Microsoft Office installed. Homework will be to practice skills learned in class.



STAR 
(Ages 12+)
11:05 a.m. - 12:05 p.m.       Fee: $95

Amazing Animal Adaptations
(Ages 8+)
12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.           Fee: $20.00
Instructor: Mandee Tejada


Join us as we explore the super powers of a variety of animals throughout the animal kingdom and learn why some of these commonly misunderstood creatures are so important to keep around. Examination of causes of declines and potential solutions will be a part of our discussion as well. Citizen science opportunities and resources for optional expansion outside the program will be supplied to support motivated, enthusiastic students.



Crafts and Snacks

(Ages 5-9)

11:05 a.m. - 12:05 p.m.

Instructor: Kristen Mumaw


Who says we can't play with our food? Edible "bird's nests"? Snacking on a "butterfly"? In this class we will be making yummy, fun, and creative snacks and desserts using common, everyday food... but so much more exciting! Please advise if you have any food allergies with registration.  

 



HOUR 3


Art History and Techniques 

(Ages 5-10)
11:05 a.m. – 12:05 p.m.           Fee: $35
Instructor: Becky McCracken

We'll learn about different artists and practice the techniques they inspire.  Students will use a drawing journal (If you were in a previous session, you will continue to use the one you have) to practice their expression.

Wordplay

(Ages 12+)

12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.           Fee:$20.00

Instructor: Mandy Wingate


Join us for a fun and interactive class about writing! Students will be introduced to a variety of hints and techniques to enhance confidence and writing skills.  Sample work will be edited as a class as we look for ways to make improvements.  Bring a notebook to class to respond to quick prompts and practice new skills. No homework will be assigned.





STAR
(Ages 7-11)
12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.      Fee: $95
Instructor: STAR Academy

Begin designing with TinkerCAD software to gain a basic understanding of the requirements, styles, and structure of quality 3D design.  Then transfer that understanding and knowledge and start designing with virtual reality.  All students will create their own customized virtual reality environment to share with their friends and family! 


**A laptop with internet access is required for all students.



Med School for Teens
(Ages 11+)
12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m.       Fee: $95
Instructor: Little Medical School of Baltimore



We offer a one-of-a-kind learning experience for middle school and high school aged students. This hands-on, in depth experience puts the student in the role of the physician.  Through interactive, creative demonstrations and projects, students see how the body works and what goes wrong with disease states.  Students learn about skin, blood and blood disorders, digestive disorders, surgery techniques, heart issues and EKGs, and the different paths to get into medical school and other healthcare professions.
